With enough government force behind him, any sort of ignorance like this becomes not a joke, but everyone's nightmare.
As an example, consider that Trofim Lysenko was a quack who thought that acquired characteristics could be passed on genetically. But with Stalin's support, he was able to impose his ideas on Soviet biologists and farmers. The result was devastating.

It is a good example of how force destroys rational thought. Americans should remind themselves of these examples as our government ratchets up its exercise of force over us.

You make a crucial point. When the marketplace decides what makes sense, bad or irrational ideas disappear quickly. Under central planning, they become everyone's "worse nightmare" as you say.
